Piazza Navona is one of the most famous squares in Rome. The square was built on top of the ancient stadium Domitian, of which it follows the form and the monumental style at the behest of Pope Innocent X. At the center of the square there is the Fountain of the Four Rivers, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and in front of it there’s the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone.
Rome - Piazza NavonaChristmas Markets
The square was home to a local market which was suspended in the summer months because the square was flooded with water in order to let the citizenship cool down, a routine in use until the XIX Century. During the Christmas period the square is filled with markets where families buy items for cribs and gifts waiting for the big party held in Piazza during the Epifania, on 6th January.
